GDPR and How It Affects You as an Employer

Thursday 11th Jan 2018, from 8:30am to 10:30am

On the 25th May 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force.  According to the Information Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, this will be “the biggest change to data protection law for a generation”.

In a recent poll of SMEs, only 51% of respondents described their level of understanding of GDPR as low, while 45% said they had “some” understanding.  Only 4% responded said they had a good understanding of GDPR requirements for employers.

In brief, this regulation will comprehensively reform the Data Protection rules that currently apply and will introduce a number of new concepts, approaches to data and restrictions on processing.

In partnership with Sagegreen, we will share with you a number of practical approaches to managing the introduction of GDPR in the employment context, and the potential impact the regulations will have on processing personal data on employees such as:

  • What is meant by the requirements for employers to ‘embed privacy’ into their employment documents and practices
  • Changes that you need to be aware of in relation to obtaining consent to process employee data
  • How a greater focus on the legal basis for processing employee data could apply to your business
  • Your increased obligations to provide information to employees and job applicants about the processing of their personal data
  • An explanation of new record keeping obligations for employers

We will also provide some practical guidance on how to put together a timetable in preparation for the introduction of GDPR and the process required to conduct an audit of HR related personal data as part of developing a compliance programme for your business.
